Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative.


Eat Healthy, Be Active Workshop Series
Unfortunately, people are frequently too busy, on a limited budget, or simply do not know how to make wise choices about food. This workshop series can help you make food choices that promote good health, maintain a healthy weight, and prevent disease. You will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to make healthy, nutritionally sound choices that lead to a better quality of life. Each workshop offers basic nutrition, hands-on learning, and cooking demonstrations to promote healthy changes in the diet. These workshops teach individuals how small changes in diet (reducing sugar, salt, fats, and calories) combined with adequate physical activity add up to improved health.

Cooking Matters @ the Store
Want to save money at the store? Want to buy healthy foods for your family? Need some tasty and healthy recipes? If you said yes, come join us for a free guided grocery store tour where you’ll learn skills for buying healthy foods on a budget.  During the hour tour, you’ll practice skills like buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices to find bargains, reading and comparing food labels, identifying whole grains and sticking to your budget! After the tour you will receive a free book full of tasty recipes and simple tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods and a free reusable grocery bag. Register now, space is limited in each class.

Derby Walks Initiative

Join the Derby Walks Initiative by pledging to walk 30 minutes most days to improve and maintain your health. Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes.  Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. By signing up and tracking your time, you will become eligible to use the indoor track at the DRC free of charge on inclement weather days. Download the forms or call 788-3781.

Derby Walks Jamboree
The last Wednesday of each month the Derby Walks initiative will host an social event on the DRC track. Health and wellness tips will be available, blood pressure can be taken, and guidance will be given on how to make your walk more enjoyable. If you’d like to find a walking partner that can be arranged too. Come walk and enjoy a little social time with other walkers.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Chronic Condition.JPGIf you are living with diabetes or a caregiver of someone who does, this workshop is for you! Diabetes self management workshops are interactive learning opportunities that teach techniques to manage common symptoms. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders.

Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; 3) healthy eating 4) appropriate use of medication; and 5) working more effectively with health care providers. Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Stop Food Waste

Nancy Larson, Director of the Pollution Prevention Institute for Kansas State University, will provi?de information on the topic of foo waste.  You’ll be amazed how much food is produced and how much gets wasted. Learn what is being done, and what you can do to stop food waste.

School Lunch,The Whole Story

April 17 - School Lunch, the Whole Story will help you understand the importance the regulations and importance of providing healthy foods in school. Martha Lawson, Food Service Director for the Derby school system will present.

Bicycle  Dreams

Lets Move Derby Schools

Starting healthy habits while in school is the key to staying healthy for a lifetime. Join the year long Let’s Move Derby Schools initiative. Kids record the number of minutes they are active each day. These minutes convert to individual and school miles. Prizes will be awarded to the most active school and the most active students. Kids can see how far they can go by the end of the school year.  Click here for details.



Safe Sleep Seminar

SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for  “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy.

Community Baby Shower

On Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Derby Health Collaborative is partnering with the Sedgwick County Health Department and the SIDS Network of Kansas to educate pregnant women and their support systems on safe sleep. This community baby shower will provide, based upon availability, a safe portable crib or a wearable blanket to pregnant women who complete the safe sleep training.  The Community Baby Shower will be held at the Oaklawn Activity Center 4904 S. Clifton, Wichita, KS 67216.
