The following programs are designed for any individual, youth or adult, with a mental or physical disability who chooses not to participate in regular Derby Recreation Commission programs. In order to participate in Special Olympics activities which are sports, a person must be: |
8 years and older |
Diagnosed as mentally retarded or identified as handicapped because of cognitive delays |
Have significant learning or vocational problems |
*Programs and trips depart from the Derby Recreation Center unless otherwise noted. |
Please register before attending practice. |
Free Spirit Uniforms |
In an effort to keep cost minimal in Free Spirits sport programs, a shirt fee of $7.00 and a $12.00 short fee will be charged at registration. The shirt and shorts will be used for each sport. Team sweatsuits will be provided for Fall, Winter and Spring programs. These may be purchased for $37.00 per set. Uniforms can be purchased at the DRC Control Desk. |

This
program is a cooperative effort with the Derby Recreation Commission and
USD 260. Activities
are planned for elementary, middle and high school students.
The Adventures for winter will be bowling and skating.

It’s time to sign up for Free Spirits basketball.
The Free Spirits will compete in league games as well as area
competition and the Special Olympics Kansas State Basketball Tournament.
Teams are formed by age and skill level.
Please register before the first practice.
No practice held January 17, February 21 and
March 11. |

FREE SPIRITS WINTER GAMES

|

Come hit the slopes with the
Free Spirits! Athletes
will get the opportunity to participate in alpine skiing, cross country
skiing and snowshoeing.
The team will practice weekly.
There will be one special weekend practice and then the team will
compete in the Heartland Winter Games in Weston, Missouri on January 28
and 29. Parents
need to attend both weekend events.
Participants may need to supply some equipment. |

SOKS
STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT |
|
|
The Free Spirits Basketball and
Cheerleading teams will be traveling to Hays for this statewide
basketball and cheerleading competition.
Besides the sporting events, the athletes will get to participate
in the Opening Ceremonies, Victory Dance and Banquet, and other fun
activities. Athletes
must participate in area competition to be eligible.

Warm up with a bowl of delicious
soup. This
annual soup supper is a benefit for the Derby Free Spirits, the local
Special Olympic team.
Tickets are available at the Derby Recreation Center, 801 E.
Market, or from any Free Spirits athlete or board member.
Tickets may be purchased at the door.
