The Derby Recreation Center Indoor Pool includes a 6-lane 25-yard lap area with two one-meter diving boards and a warm water leisure area. The leisure area features a zero depth entrance, a water bubbler, a water mushroom, and three pop-up fountains. Adjacent to the pool through the sliding glass doors is a sun patio with tables, chairs and a grass volleyball court. The pool can be seen from the glass viewing area on the main floor as well as from the Fitness Center and Aerobics Studio upstairs.

SWIMMING CHECK LIST

Swim times and space varies according to day and space.

Swimmers must possess a facility user ID card or daily pass.

All swimmers entering the pool area must check in at the pool desk and sign in.

Children under 8 must be accompanied by an "in water" adult (16 or older).

A head to toe shower must be taken by all swimmers.

Toys and floatation devices are subject to the approval of the Pool Supervisor.

Children 5 and older should use the gender appropriate locker room. A family locker room is available for those that need extra assistance or privacy.

Pool temperatures vary with the weather. Normally the pool temperatures are between 83 and 85 degrees.

SWIM LESSON PROCEDURES

Levels 1, 2 & 3 must present a copy of birth certificate at registration if one is not already on file at the DRC.

Students must be five (5) years old by the first day of class. No exceptions.

Students may be enrolled in only one class at a time.

Registration will be taken until class begins. Decisions on class cancellations and combined classes will be made after the first class meeting.

The DRC reserves the right to cancel or combine classes with less than six enrolled.

Parents may observe lessons from the glass viewing area.

Out of district fees apply to all swim lessons.

After children are dismissed on the last day of lessons. students may re-enroll in available classes.

 

POOL RENTALS

Do you want to party? The best way to celebrate is with a pool party. Rent the pool for a birthday, family reunions, scout group or any other reason. Reservations are taken in person at the Derby Recreation Center. Requests must be made at least 10 days prior to the requested date. Rental times are as follows:

Friday: 7:30-9:15pm

Saturday/Sunday: 5:30-7:15pm  or 7:30-9:15pm

Rental Fee: $40.00                               (Out of district applies)

Refundable Deposit: $50.00

Guard Fee: $8.00 per hour per guard

Derby Recreation Commission Lifeguards are required and will be scheduled upon confirmation of reservation.

ADULT/CHILD RATIO

1 Adult per 10 swimmers over the age of 8 years.

1 swimming adult per 3 swimmers under the age of 8 years.

1 swimming adult for every 5 swimmers, combined ages.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

LEVELS 1-5

We are excited to offer the 2004 updated swim lesson program to your children.  There are many changes, such as when skills are introduced and  creative new ways for our instructors to teach. Ages are 4 and older.   If you have any questions about the program, please contact the Director, Assistant Director or Swim Lesson Coordinator at 788-3781.   See bottom of page for level descriptions.

 

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Lesson sign-ups for Levels 1-6 are taken ONLY at the Derby Recreation Center and students may enroll in ONLY one class at a time.  Students must be four years old by the first day of class and must present certification of birth date when enrolling in Levels 1, 2 or 3 if one is not already on file at the Derby Recreation Commission.  Students may re-enroll in available classes at dismissal on the last day of class.

 

WHAT IS THE COST?

Lessons are $25.00 for residents of USD 260. Out of district participants pay the fee and a half, $37.50.

 

ARE THERE WAIT LISTS?

A minimum of six students is needed to hold a class and ten students per class is maximum. Please take advantage of our wait list option if a class is full. Registration is taken until classes begin. Cancellations and combining or adding of classes will be made after first class meetings.

 

WHERE DO I WATCH?

Parents are asked to watch from outside the pool enclosure.  All classes are held at the Derby Recreation Center where a small viewing area is provided.

The American Red Cross Learn to Swim program Levels 1, 2 and 3 will be used to instruct children in groups of 2 or 3.  Some children benefit from the individual attention of these lessons taught by certified instructors.  Space is limited, so sign up early!

WEE WET WIGGLERS
 

Aquatic Program promotes water safety knowledge and water adjustment.  Swimming readiness skills, fun and enjoyment, and parental involvement are all important components of this program.  Parents only must attend orientation the first class.  There will be no swimming during the orientation.

MINI-ONES 

The American Red Cross has updated the Learn to Swim Program as we are happy to offer the new program to your children.  Mini-Ones is a new transition class for children ages 4-5 years of age with no previous swim lesson experience to enter the Learn to Swim program.  Parents, please take advantage of the smaller class size for your children who may need more individual attention or who may be reluctant to participate in a regular Level One class.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Private swim lessons are arranged by the Aquatics Director and are subject to instructor and space availability.  Whether a student needs one or a series of lessons, an instructor will assist in providing individual guidance for basic to advanced skills.  Our swim lesson pass system allows you to purchase as many lessons as you require.  Present one pass to your instructor for each lesson.  Ask for a private swim lesson form at the  DRC to submit a request.  For more information call Lynn at 788-3781.

RED ROVER IS AT THE POOL!

Adults and kids both love to play on Red Rover, our huge inflatable hound dog.  Check the schedule for when he will be floating in the Derby Recreation Center Pool.  He is also available for a small fee to use at pool rentals.  For more information, call 788-3781.

 

LAP DAWGS

Whether you are a novice or an expert swimmer, start lapping up the miles in our Lap Dawg program.  As you swim, count your laps, and whether you swim two laps or 20 laps, write it down and let us add them up.  We reward you with certificates for periodic milestones.  Lane availability varies according to day and time.  Check the pool desk or ask a lifeguard for more information and a pool schedule.

 

W.O.W.-WORKOUT OF THE WEEK

Is your swimming routine getting old?  Check this out!  We have a variety of workouts for you to try next to the Lap Dawg tally sheet.  Workouts can be adapted to any level or ability.  Please feel free to ask the lifeguards if you have questions.

 

WATER WALKING AND JOGGING

Splash into your next workout!  Water walking and jogging have all the benefits of land, but without pounding on your joints.  Water gives you balance and buoyancy that land can’t.  Jump in the pool to get a great workout.  Ask aquatic staff for exercise tips and demonstrations.  Jogging belts available.

 

FAMILY NIGHT SWIM

Stay in the swim this winter on Saturday evenings at the pool!  Drop by for a splashingly good time with family and friends—it’s always summer in the pool.  Recreation swimming rules apply.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by a participating, swimming adult.  No part of membership privileges.

SWIMMING WITH SANTA     

Santa in a Speedo?  Well, maybe not quite, but Santa will be at the pool to welcome holiday swimmers as they enjoy a little water play while mom and dad do some last minute shopping.  Santa’s helpers will be available to accompany children under 8 into the water.  Milk and cookies will finish off an afternoon of festive fun!

STANDARD FIRST AID  

American Red Cross Standard First Aid is used to provide basic first aid care for any individual and adult CPR.  Students must be 14 years of age, perform all critical skills and correctly answer at least 80% of the written test questions.  Successful candidates will receive a certification card which is renewable every three years.  Class space is limited, so sign up early.  For more information call 788-3781.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING 

This is the updated American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, which  includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, PDT, and First Aid.  Students must be 15 years of age and complete the prerequisites: (1) a 500-yard continuous swim using front crawl and breaststroke, (2) swim 20 yards, surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet and swim 20 yards back with the brick.  Successful candidates must attend every class session, pass the written exams, perform all critical skills, and three final skill scenarios.

DISCOVER SCUBA 

Discover the sport of S.C.U.B.A.!  P.A.D.I. Instructor Kevin Runkle will be on deck and in the pool to assist you and give you an opportunity to find out just how much fun scuba diving can be.  Explore the depths of the diving well and experience the wonder of being underwater.  Participants must be at least 12 years old and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  Sign up in advance so we can be prepared for everyone.

SCUBA 

Start enjoying one of the fastest growing sports and explore the underwater world of the DRC pool.  PADI instructor Kevin Runkle will conduct a Part 1 SCUBA class.  Price includes books, materials and equipment rental.  Register early to be able to read the manual and complete the reviews prior to class.

If your child can perform all skills in one level, they would advance to the next.

Level 1-Introduction to Water Skills

-Enter and exit water safely

-Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object

-Swim on front and back using arm and leg actions

-Submerge mouth, nose and eyes

-Float on front and back

-Follow basic water safety rules

-Exhale underwater through mouth and   nose

-Explore arm and hand movements

-Use a life jacket

Level 2-Fundamental Aquatic Skills

-Enter water by stepping or jumping from  the side

-Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object

-Roll over from front to back, back to front

-Swim on side

-Exit water safely using ladder or side

-Float on front and back

-Tread water using arm and leg motions

-Move in the water while wearing a life  jacket

-Submerge entire head

-Perform front and back glide

-Swim on front and back using combined  strokes

Level 3-Stroke Development

-Jump into deep water from the side

-Bob with the head fully submerged

-Perform survival float

-Butterfly—kick and body motion

-Use Check-Call-Care in an emergency

-Dive from kneeling or standing position

-Use rotary breathing in horizontal  position

-Change from horizontal to vertical  position on front and back

-Perform the HELP and Huddle position

-Submerge and retrieve and object

-Perform front and back glide

-Perform front and back crawl

-Perform a reaching assist    

Level 4-Stroke Improvement

-Perform shallow dive or dive from stride  position

-Perform open turns on front and back  using any stroke

-Perform the following: Front and back crawl, Breaststroke, Butterfly,

  Elementary backstroke, Swim on side using scissors-like kick

-Use safe diving rules

-Perform a throwing assist

-Swim underwater

-Tread water using sculling arm motions   and kick

-Perform compact jump into water from a  height while wearing a life jacket

-Care for conscious choking victim

-Perform feet-first surface dive   

Level 5-Stroke Refinement

-Tread water with two different kicks

-Learn survival swimming

-Perform rescue breathing

-Perform the following:

·          Pike surface dive

·          Butterfly

·          Shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke

·          Front flip turn

·          Breaststroke
