Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative. All classes require registration. Call the DRC at 788-3781 or click here.

Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes.  Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. Imagine you are taking a walk through High Park and you come upon a page from a children’s picture book. As you walk along the path, you discover another page, and then another and you realize you’re reading a story! StoryWalk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with all the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and other adults to take young children outdoors to enjoy reading stories together, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both children and their families. Join the fun at Derby’s High Park!

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

EFNEP offers 5 weeks of interactive, practical lessons in basic nutrition, food preparation, food budget management, and food safety in settings convenient for you. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is sponsored by the USDA and taught by K-State Research & Extension.

We serve parents with young children and pregnant women that are eligible for:
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC, Head Start, Families whose children receive free and reduced lunch. Free, but you must register.

Get Real, Get Healthy - Becoming Your Ideal Me

Find out how to reshape your body, restore your energy and reboot your life by healing the root cause of overeating. Join Patty Stuever for this unique 4 week program on how to release that extra weight by learning to eliminate sugar and become your Ideal Me. It is recommended to purchase the following book to enhance your class experience; 8 to Your Ideal Weight by MK Mueller. Free, but you must register.

Oaklawn Community Garden 

Healthy living starts with healthy eating. Have you wanted to learn how to garden or just don’t have the space at your home? Have you wanted to teach the “little ones” where their food comes from? The Oaklawn Community Garden is 5,000 square feet located just east of the Oaklawn Activity Center, 4904 S. Clifton. Community gardening is perfect for apartment dwellers, senior citizens and families with young children, churches and local community organizations. Space is limited so act now to reserve your garden plot. The cost for a 4 x16 foot plot is just $20 for the entire growing season. Grow your own flowers, fruits and vegetables!

  • 4 foot high garden plots.
  • Water provided.
  • Some tools available.
  • Come and go at your leisure.

Volunteers are also needed to help get the garden ready for spring. If you need community service hours or just want to make new friends contact Debbie Williams at or telephone (316)788- 3781.

Chronic Disease 

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)

If you are living with depression, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc., then this 6-week program is for you. This CDSMP workshop is interactive and helps you learn techniques to manage your chronic condition. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders. Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling live.

Let’s Diabeat This Programs



SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derbybaby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy. New moms (within 1 year) and expectant moms will received a portable baby crib upon completion of the requirements.

Baby Talk is a free prenatal education series taught by medical professionals that gives women and their family a chance to learn and get ready for the new baby. You will get informative materials and baby items simply by coming to class each week. The Baby Talk series offers an introductory class and sign up plus 6 free classes. Baby Talk gives you a place to go where you can get your questions answered in a safe and fun community.

8 to GREAT

8 to Great is THE powerful process for positive change. If you want to be inspired and empowered to be the best version of yourself you can possibly be, take charge of your life, and make positive changes then join Patty Stuever to learn an easy-to-implement, 8 step success process. It will be the most encouraging, uplifting and quickest 3 hours of your life. Free, but you must register.

Many times young people lack skills when starting their first job. Youth Job Connections is a program to teach young people skills in communication, teamwork, enthusiasm, networking, problem-solving and critical thinking. Many youth struggle filling out applications, building their resume and interviewing.  The Youth Job Connections program will teach young people responsibility, organization, time management and helping to establish good work habits, experience, and financial

This 8-week program is available to Derby youth ages 15 to 18. Class meets 2 hours each week. Interested youth must fill out an application and be accepted into the program. Once accepted into the program, an enrollment fee of $30.00 is required. Upon completion of requirements, graduates of the program will be interviewed for various spring and summer jobs at the Derby Recreation Commission.
