Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative. All classes require registration. Call the DRC at 788-3781 or click here.

FALL 2020

COVID-19 Precautions
We value the safety of our staff and participants. Social distancing will be practiced in all programs and participants are asked to wear a mask. Classrooms will be disinfected before, during and after class. Instructors will wear facemasks in the common areas of the facility and have the option to wear facemasks while teaching. If you have any concern about your safety, we recommend you wait to take the class until the current environment changes.

Move Your Way Community Challenge

move-your-way-iconRun. Walk. Dance. Play. What's your move? The Derby Health Collaborative is challenging every resident in Derby and the USD 260 community to a month-long activity program. Everyone can find safe, fun, ways to get moving. Download the tracking calendar to record "your moves" in order to be entered into a drawing for prizes.

To be eligible for prizes download a challenge tracking card at the DRC website. Complete the card and turn your tracking card in to the DRC by October 15. For more information contact Debbie at 788-3781 or debbie@derbyrec.com. 

Derby Walks InitiativeDerby Walks Logo

Join the Derby Walks Initiative by pledging to walk 30 minutes most days to improve and maintain your health. Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes.  Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. By signing up and tracking your time, you will become eligible to use the indoor track at the DRC free of charge on inclement weather days. Download the forms or call 788-3781.

Imagine you are taking a walk through High Park and you come upon a page from a children’s picture book. As you walk along the path, you discover another page, and then another and you realize you’re reading a story! StoryWalk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with all the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and other adults to take young children outdoors to enjoy reading stories together, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both children and their families. Join the fun at Derby’s High Park!

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

EFNEP offers 5 weeks of interactive, practical lessons in basic nutrition, food preparation, food budget management, and food safety in settings convenient for you. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is sponsored by the USDA and taught by K-State Research & Extension.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Buy healthy food on a budget.
  • Plan nutritious and quick meals.
  • Prepare and taste recipes your family will love.

We serve parents with young children and pregnant women that are eligible for:

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC, Head Start, Families whose children receive free and reduced lunch. Free, but you must register.

Prevent T2 

The CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps you take control of your health by adopting habits to reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes and improve your overall health and well-being. 

The Prevent T2 program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing diabetes. The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. Participants are charged an enrollment fee but upon completion of requirements get reimbursed plus receive a one year free DRC membership. 

In order to qualify for the Diabetes Prevention Program, participants must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI ≥ 25) and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes by their physician. Call Debbie at (316) 529-2677 for complete details.

HEALTHY START

CRIB CLINIC 

SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy. New moms (within 1 year) and expectant moms will received a portable baby crib upon completion of the requirements.

Baby TalkBabyTalk logo 

Baby Talk is a free prenatal education series taught by medical professionals that gives women and their family a chance to learn and get ready for the new baby. You will get informative materials and baby items simply by coming to class each week. The Baby Talk series offers an introductory class and sign up plus 6 free classes.
