The mission of the Oaklawn Community Garden is to provide space for individuals, families and friends to work together to enrich lives and strengthen community bonds by creating and sustaining a community garden that will increase accessibility to fruits and vegetables to improve health, provide horticultural education and recreation endeavors.
The Oaklawn Community Garden is 5000 square feet and is located just east of the Oaklawn Activity Center, 4904 S. Clifton. It has both communal and individual garden plots. Individual plots may be rented annually for $20. Scholarships for plot rental are available according to income. Plots are rented on a first come, first served basis, beginning March 1 each growing season. Membership is open to all persons aged 18 and older who reside in the USD 260 boundaries and agree to follow the garden by laws and rules.
The Oaklawn Community Garden is supported by area master gardeners and staff from the Derby Recreation Commission. Start up funding for the Oaklawn Community Garden came from a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation and Kansas State University. Additional support comes from the Derby Community Foundation, Derby Rotary, and the Westar Energy Green Team.
